Frequently Asked Questions

Taking the first step toward counselling can feel uncertain and that’s completely okay. We’ve answered some of the most common questions people ask before starting, so you can feel more confident and informed about what to expect.

  • Counsellors generally support clients through specific life challenges, helping them build coping skills, improve wellbeing, and navigate issues such as stress, relationships, grief, or career transitions. Counselling often focuses on the here-and-now and practical strategies for change. Psychotherapists, on the other hand, work with clients at a deeper level to explore long-term patterns, emotional difficulties, and underlying issues that may stem from past experiences. Psychotherapy can involve more in-depth personal exploration and typically requires longer-term engagement. If you’re not sure which one you need — don’t worry! We’ll help you figure out the best fit for your situation.

  • No referral needed! You can book a session directly with us — no GP visit required.

  • At the moment, Medicare doesn’t cover counselling unless you’re seeing a registered psychologist or social worker under a Mental Health Care Plan. However, some private health funds provide partial rebates — check with your provider to see if you’re eligible.

  • Absolutely. Everything you share in counselling stays private. The only exceptions are if there’s a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, or if we’re required by law to share information (for example, in a court order).

  • Everyone’s journey is different. Some people find clarity in a few sessions, while others prefer ongoing support over several months. In our first few sessions, we’ll take time to understand your goals and develop a therapy plan together. Counselling is a gradual, collaborative process — it’s not about quick fixes, but about creating space to explore, heal, and grow at a pace that feels right for you. Committing to 5–6 sessions often helps build the foundation for meaningful change.

  • Your first session is simply a chance to talk to better understand you. We’ll discuss what’s been happening for you, what you’d like to work on, and how counselling can help. Together, we can identify and prioritise goals for therapy and develop a plan. There’s no pressure — it’s a safe, supportive space to start your journey towards healing.

  • Counselling sessions usually start weekly for a few weeks, then may move to fortnightly as you progress. The number of sessions depends on your goals and what feels right for you — sometimes just a few sessions are all that’s needed.

  • Yes! We offer online and phone counselling for your convenience. You can connect from home, your office, or anywhere you feel comfortable — all while maintaining the same level of care and confidentiality.

  • The best counsellor is someone you feel comfortable with. Look for a professional who is qualified, registered (with ACA or PACFA), and experienced with your specific concerns. We’re always happy to answer questions before you book — finding the right fit is the first step to healing.

  • We completely understand that plans can change. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please let us know at least 24 hours in advance. This helps us support your counsellor’s time and offer the spot to another client who may be waiting. We’ll be glad to find a new time that works best for you.
